The first producer of free ebooks. a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to "encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks". The oldest digital library and of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books.
The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer. As of March 2013, Project Gutenberg claimed over 42,000 items in its collection.

Project Gutenberg ebooks are free in the United States because their copyright has expired. They may not be free of copyright in other countries. Readers outside of the United States must check the copyright laws of their countries before downloading or redistributing Project Gutenberg ebooks. Project Gutenberg also have a number of copyrighted titles, for which the copyright holder has given permission for unlimited non-commercial worldwide use.
