It's safer to use a condom if you are sexually active.

Phil Johnson, M.D., an AIDS clinician

Phil Johnson, M.D. discusses issues in HIV prevention related to honest disclosure and communication. People who wish to have sex with a new partner may lie about their status, saying it's negative when it's positive or unknown. People may also tell a partner they are being faithful in a monogamous relationship when in fact they are having sex outside the relationship as well. This means that if you have unprotected sex with a partner, you are betting your life on their being honest with you.

It's important to use condoms (rubbers, prophylactics) to help reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These diseases include the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, and syphilis. You can get them through having sex -- vaginal, anal, or oral.
